Patrol GQ 4.2 - Engine Oil Recommendations

I read a few posts about GQ 4.2 Engine Oil Recommendations and wondered if anything has changed since then, I have a GQ 1989 Diesel 4.2 thats on 500,000km

Caltex Delo 400 Multigrade 15w40 seems to be a popular recommendation from posts about 7 years ago. (2010) but given that we are in 2017 has anything changed?

    back in 2011, Tommo_C suggested

    • Engine: Wesfil Z115 filters and Fuchs Titan GT plus 20W-50 Semi Synthetic oil, 10.4 litres
    • Front diff: Fuchs Titan Gear HYP 80W-90 oil, 5.4 litres
    • Transfer case: Fuchs Titan Gear HYP 80W-90 oil, 1.7 litres
    • Gearbox: Fuchs Titan Gear 75-90, 3.9 litres
    • Rear diff: Castrol Gear LSX 85W-140, 2.2 litres

    back in 2009, Jeffs5 suggested

    • Caltex Dello 400 Engine, - Engine 10L
    • Front Diff 80-90 GL5, - Front Diff 5.4L
    • Rear Diff LS140 GL5, - Rear Diff 3L (your's should be LSD , look for LSD sticker on rear of diff.)
    • Transfer Case 80-90 GL4, - Transfer Case 2.2L,
    • Gearbox 75-90 GL4. - Gearbox 3.9L

(Remembering diffs,g-box etc. won't take all those amounts as the gears hold oil.)

    back in 2008, Patrol_Brad suggested

    • Engine: Fuchs Ultra lube 1540
    • Gearbox: Fuchs Titan Gear MP90
    • Transfer case: Fuchs Titan Gear MP90
    • Front diff: Fuchs Supergear 80W90
    • Rear diff: Fuchs Supergear LS 85W140

Back in 2006 there's a comment from AussieMav91 on another forum:

One thing to Look for in the old TD42's, the Oil grade recommended is a CF, The Current latest is CJ-4 for Low emission engines. If you run a Higher Grade than CF you run the risk of oil burning because as you go higher grades the Detergents increase. More detergents means less carbon build up, and in the TD's carbon helps seal them rings from burning oil. So be weary of that!.

I look forward to your recommendations.

I run shell rimula r4x 15w40 change oil every 10000km 93 model gq with 440000 on clock runs like a dream no oil topups between changes and motor is not sludgey like i have seen with some customers cars running other oils. Usally once they switch after two or 3 changes using rimula the motor gets cleaner. Have also had a few customers comment that their cars run a lot smoother after the change.
