Shopping for a GU.
Yes. The time has come...................................not.
My Sin-OutLaw has got the fourby bug, courtesy of yours truly.
He is looking for a weekend warrior. I have ear-bashed him about the ZD complications , so a late model 4.2 GQ or an early GU 4.5, RD or even a 4.8 could be the go if the price is right.
He has a budget of around ten grand.
So I open the flood gates and am ready for your expert opinions, Cheers.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Are the 4.5 a good unit? They are basically a bored out 4.2, aren't they? Do they have head gasket probs like the early TB?

I am more than happy with my 4.5 however it had the Exhaust Ports enlarged to enable it to breathe better which I did because was a bit disappointed with the performance.
Mine has done 320,000 and going strong.
Fuel Guzzler on Petrol but I run Dual Fuel

It will be his choice, but I think he is leaning towards a diesel. He was quite impressed with how the RB30 could rev on sand, so I had to explain how the diesels use grunt not revs to get the job done. I have seen some of the problems that the RD28T have and the lighter gearbox they run, but it may also be in his price range as he isn't after a tow mule.

What sort fuel figures were you getting on petrol before and after the port mod, Bob?

You will find a 4.8 under 10k. I paid 7 for mine. They are about. Just have to look and be a bit patient.
And before anyone goes yeah its probably flogged out, i got all receipts and service history for the last 10 years with it along with the original service book too.

Don't rule out the ZD's. Despite the problems with some, there are still a lot more that haven't blown up. I have a ZD in a 2002 Elgrand 4x4 and did a lot of research into the problem. A decent catch can to keep oil out of the inlet tract is 90% of the solution. Adjust the turbo to limit max boost, especially if a larger exhaust is fitted as the turbo will spool quicker and overshoot. Also I run a bluetooth consult scanner and NDS1 app on android tablet to monitor various ECU parameters.
Besides if he really wants to experience the fourby bug he has to spend half his time under the bonnet.
