With a handy father in law like Craig, it wouldn't be the 'temperamental' nature of a ZD which would put me off, but all that computerised/sensor driven technology. With a $10k purhase budget & a tight running & maintenance budget I'd want a motor conducive to DIY.

I also question whether a Patrol or Cruiser are really the best choice for a youngster on a tight budget. Why not something like a Suzuki? Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run & good enough to have a lot of off road fun in.

Yeah, Patrol, as they have four kids, so far. The Nissan is cheaper to buy too.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Is there any way on a ZD and TD or even an RD that an inspection camera can be inserted into the bores?

My neighbors just picked up a 2004 4.8 GU with 4 inch lift big tyres uhf and all the lights from a footy stadium for $10k off gumtree.
    Bargains are out there.
