Possible turbo bearing screech HELP!!
Hi guys
I have a 2000 GUII Patrol ZD30 auto and I'm having some trouble with a noise that sounds like it's coming from the turbo. It happens when the car is under boost and acceleration generally above 2000 rpm it sounds like really bad belt screech. I've read that it might be gaskets but I don't know. When I bought the car it made the noise for a while then it kind of faded away and the other day I put a boost controller on it and since then it has been making the noise.
Has this happened to any of you if so what was wrong.
Really hoping it's something small like a gasket or maybe the egr.
Any input is greatly appreciated
Cheers Jack

D'day mate, having just had this happen on a Merc Vito work van, I suggest you get it looked at as quickly as possible. It may just be sucking air somwhere but if the bearing is about to fail, the resulting disintegration can do heaps of bad thing to the motor hope it is a laek somewhere.

Have you noticed any decrease in power when this started?

Since I've owned the car it hasn't really changed. Only had a power increase since putting the boost controller on. And I haven't noticed any loss in power.
Not sure if the guy before has loss of power though

It doesn't lack on power when it is screeching. I took it to a mechanic and he says it's the turbo but to be honest with you I don't really wanna fork out 2500 or so for a new turbo I wanna try everything else first

Could be just air leaking from the IC or bad hose connections between the turbo, IC and engine intake. Tighten all your hose clamps (the clamp at the turbo output is especially difficult to tighten) and look for oil weaping around the intercooler, which indicates leaks.

All the hose clamps are tight and the ic isn't leaking. The noise is coming almost exclusively from the turbo.
Any other ideas

Take the inlet hose off from the airbox to the turbo compressor and feel if the shaft of the turbine has play and also inspect it.
Take a good photo even and put it on here.

My money is on a warped exhaust manifold. Quite common with these motors. Get a bright torch and check, if you can, around where the manifold meets the head and check for any soot spots.
Just thought. Is the intercooler the factory one? If so, remove it and check it for leaks, as this is also another common issue, factory leaks on the intercooler. Oily residue on the core of the cooler is a good tell tale sign of a holed IC. The noise just could be the boost leaking out.
