How much soot are we talking I've breifly looked over and haven't seen anything unusual. I'll upload a video of the manifold and what not and you can tell me what I'm missing.

Did anybody mention a warped EGR pipe at the back? Had that on my 3L CRD. It's common. But unsure if your older Di models have that pipe? @mudski ??

From my knowledge, a warp EGR pipe is pretty much unheard of in the Di's. Could be a split in the EGR pipe, but I still reckon its either a warped exh manifold or a holed intercooler.

Fair enough. Mine was split right at the back in a bastard of a spot. And like OP's symptoms, only screeched it's head off above very specific PSI, which was around 12 or so from memory ...

Yeah more common on the CRD's as the exhaust does run a little hotter on a CRD to the Di. The symtoms the OP is having do point to intake, post turbo. or the exhaust manifold.

i meant the second one at the top,the black is slight, but it happens when the turbo boosts, plant the foot and you'd hear it...drive like a nanna nothing...take it somewhere and just tell them you think it's the manifold gasket, someone that fixes nissan they'll be straight onto it..
there is only a faint sign of black, but they diagnosed it straight up
Watch this space, as there maybe a comment added soon

Could it possibly be the turbo?

    J/K

You say it's only started since you put the boost controller on it, how much extra boost are you flowing with the boost controller? You might be pushing your turbo beyond it's safe working limits.

    How much is not much?
I think you are just hearing the sound of boost if you have an exhaust leak it going to be there regardless of the boost setting how ever if its a leaking IC you will hear it more as you up the boost
