Explorer Charles Sturt and his men were trapped from January 1845 to July 1845 at Depot Glen when a drought set in. To give his men something to do, Sturt instructed them to build a rock cairn on nearby Red Hill which he later named Mt Poole. Little did Sturt realise that he was erecting a monument to James Poole, his second in command, who later died from scurvy & was buried at Depot Glen.

"Yet, upon the whole, the space I traversed is unlikely to become the haunt of civilized man....." - Charles Sturt
