    What3Words GPS Mapping

    Stumbled across these guys on another forum, it's called What3Words.

    A company in the UK who have broken broken down GPS coordinates and turned them into 3 word coordinates in 3m X 3m grid squares to make it easier to remember.

    Thought it may be worthwhile having a gander at their site for full info;

    Interesting concept, can see the benefits in undeveloped parts of the world, but it is not a unique idea. The Maidenhead Locator System was developed in 1980 for the use of Amateur Radio operators to locate stations around the world using letters & numbers layed out in a grid.

    These grids can be broken down into smaller segments for greater accuracy. For example, my main gridsquare is QF59 which is about 20 x 15 km in size. Adding HO, this brings the square down to about 7 x 5 km`s. These can be broken down even further. So my location is QF59HOas, which is a gridsquare of about 1 X 1.5 km`s, close enough for most radio applications, but can be broken down further.

    The 3 word system is still a good idea for area`s that do not have access to the internet or phone services, but you still need a gps or smartphone with the app to find/give the location based on the 3 words which most people in the undeveloped world haven`t got.

    I was watching that YT vid and also thinking of where the 3 naughty word locations might be at. Lol. Good idea though. The gps co-ords just confuse simple people like me.

    UTM GPS co-ords assume you can count.

    what3words assumes you can spell.

    Solved one problem but introduced another...

    Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.
