Auto Transmission Service
Has anyone had a go at servicing their automatic transmisson for a 2004 4.8 Patrol? I'm having conflicting reports about what is required. How much oil is needed, what type, is there a filter that needs to cleaned. I'm sick of being ripped off and I want to have a go myself.

Well the filter in most auto boxxes just get replaced and can be ordered normally through repco etc. Check manual for transmission fluid needed. It will quote with/with out torque converter. If old fluid is bright red I wouldn't empty torque converter. If it's brownish change fluid in torque converter, which means box out.

Apparently you don't have to remove the box to drain the torque converter fluid. We have a guy near us who uses what they call a power flush unit, which apparently removes the fluid from the converter as well. He does the full service including filters for around $200. I am going to see him next week and will post more when I have the info.
