    GQ Vibration Problem

    GQ Vibration Problem
    G'day to Everyone.

I'm a 1st time Patrol owner from Southern NSW (Southern Riverina area) Australia. I purchased my 1993 GQ DX 4.2 Manual Diesel Wagon approximately 2 years ago. It's previous life had been spent in the ownership of an older couple who travelled mainly highway kilometres up and down the Australian East coast. The vehicle had travelled 225000k's when I purchased it in April 2009. I fitted a 30mm and 50mm lift, front and rear respectively, and it has now travelled 275,000k's, also mainly on highways. The vehicle tyre badge says it was built with 16's but t wears 15" sunraysias. The vehicle is well looked after, drives like new when bought, apart from a clutch rumble/shudder when beginning to reverse, and was still the same after 12 months. Over the past year I've noticed a slight vibration (seems to be high speed shaft/drive vibe rather than tyre when approaching 100kph - new tyres fitted last November (Bridgestone AT Duelers) and two independant sets of wheel balances and alignments since with no change). Vibration worsens at 103 - 110 kph then stays same at that level and beyond. Drops off and drives liike new again when lowering speed back to below 100kph. Have checked rear tail shaft front and back unis - no slop, rock solid, and have greased with no change. Love this car but I need to solve this problem. Any ideas/advice.

    Regards

    Mav

Hey mate - others will be along to offer further advice, but the only thing that pops to mind is the difference in ride height front to rear - 50mm lift is normally no issue, but only 30mm in the front gives a 20mm offset which might be just enough to throw it out of kilter?? Have you checked wheel bearings (tight?), the rims themselves (not out of round or buckled), etc?? Sorry for the possibly obvious, but it sounds like you've already done everything else.

Good luck with it and hope it gets sorted!!!

The drive shaft may look OK but it may have thrown a balance weight off. I would be removing the shaft and getting it checked out by a driveshaft specialist. I would do this first because at 275,000km there may also be wear in the uni's that you have not felt by hand.
It could also be caused by driveline angles. This is not usually a problem with 2" lifts but is still a possibility. If the angles do need to be adjusted either gearbox cross member spacers or adjustable rear upper control arms can be fitted.

I'd say the others are on to something with the 20mm difference in offset, it unfortunately doesn't take much for this to happen but normally 2" is fine. The frustrating thing about noticing this while driving is you may think its coming from a certain place but could be somewhere else completely! You'll be surprised how vibrations can travel through out your truck.

I once had a sigma turbo that started shuddering after I changed the clutch plate/pressure plate/thrust bearing. When I put the drive shaft back I didn't line the bolts up exaclty as they were before and ended up being out by 1 (should have been 1234, but was 2341). I kept moving the driveshaft by 1 bolt until the vibration went away. (you can tell I am not a real mechanic, but it did work).

Hi mavd , just joined this forum so you may have fixed your problem.
Had the same problem with a brand new Maverick both Ford and Nissan were unable to fix it even under warrranty. My problem was the univresal joints both were too tight. I relieved the inside of all the yokes to relieve the crush on the cross of the u joint . Had the shaft rebalanced . problem solved. I found out about this through a friend who was a f1 trans specialist. hope this helps
