Since I replaced the fluid with dextron III. I have noticed that the pump is whining.
my questions are: Is the 12.5 hose restricting flow to the pump?
Is the Dextron III incompatible with the system?
I'm guessing you replaced the hose 'cos it was leaking at the joint between barb and hose?
I had that issue. When I removed the hose to have a close look at it, it looked fine. I applied some silicon to the barb and
put the hose back in and tightened the hose clip properly.
It has never leaked since then. Before that, it was leaking for ages.
BTW, original hose comes with a heat shield around it 'cos the power steering hose from reservoir to the pump is way too close
to the exhaust. Make sure to wrap some heat shield around the new hose.
I use power steering fluid. I reckon it's the same as Dex III.

The hose has gone brittle and cracked, so I cant cut it back and re-clamp it. I went into town, to get some 5/8, but they can't seem to get it. I hope the new hose can withstand suction too. Now I am stranded here, as I don't want to damage the pump, as cavitation can eat through metal.

I risked at trip into town, as mechanic pointed me in the right direction. I have bought a metre of aeroflow series 400 hose. The salesman reckons it should be OK to use a hose clamp on it. Unfortunately it is blue, but beggars can't be choosers. It is way stiffer than the 1/2" I have on so should resist collapsing under suction.

Replaced the hose and the whirring noise has died down. I will take it for a drive tomorrow to check it at higher revs.

Wrap some heat resistant paper or wraps around it. I reckon the reason they go brittle is from the exhaust heat.

That and the fact it has been on the vehicle for 22 years I used the fibre-alloy wrap and a the standard foam sleeve.
