    Making model engines

    Gday all

I've been absent from this forum for a little while because I've been very busy in the machining metal world and I've absolutely fallen in love with it. I've put myself through a steep learning curve and have learnt a lot of tricks and abilities that I didn't know where possible including making my own piston rings, bearings, nickel plating etc.
Anyways, I thought I'd share some pics of some of the things I've made.
This was the first engine i made. It was straight forward and came with drawings to follow to create each part. It's a double acting steam engine that also runs on compressed air.

I wanted to make something slightly more difficult so I made a 4 cylinder steam engine. This was off the top of my head and didn't follow any plans.

Here is a video of it running
    http://youtu.be/AJdh9wP2gUM

Anyway, after finishing this I wanted to make something bigger, so I decided to make a v8 internal combustion engine. I started this in October last year and unfortunately am still going with it. It will (hopefully) run on nitro fuel, it is 4 stroke and apart from the nuts and bolts and timing chain, I've made every part for it.

    More pics to follow...
IMO and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Making cams on the lathe and mill

After heat treating them, they are harder than a file.

Anyway, I'm not far off. I need to create the intake side of things including a carburettor and finish off the timing side of things, but hopefully I can start it in a few weeks.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

    Cheers all. Appreciate it.

The v8 is roughly abouts 70cc. At this stage it will just sit on its base and look nice on the shelf. Haven't thought about using it in anything yet.

I asked about cam timing and duration when I was making the cams and went with 280 degrees duration for both intake and exhaust and 110 degrees lobe separation. Supposed to give it a nice warm v8 sound.

    Brilliant finish with it all..

I went to country show a while back and all the steam engines and tractors still make me moist lol..
I'm afraid if I get into it I'll live in the shed lol..
Keep us updated with the v8.
Quick Q. Where are ya glow plugs going in the head?

Awesome work, I know a few guys from the airport that make steam trains and Boilers.
They needed a boiler ticket to operate them.
70cc on methanol would boogy, when
you consider how fast a small nitro motor RC goes
04 ST 3lt auto, not enough Mods to keep me happy, but getting there
