    Weird hub noise

I've got a set of AVM manual hubs (the red high performance version) the drivers side is making a weird sort of rattle sound when in 2wd and unlocked. I presume they just need some grease but the weird thing is that I got rid of the auto locking hubs a year ago because the drivers side was making a weird noise. The noise goes away if the hub is locked. Could it be anything other than the hub?

When the hub is locked in either 2WD or 4WD then no noise at all. I just thought it was a coincidence that I had the same problem with both the factory auto hubs and the after market manual hubs on the same side of the car.

I wondered about that, but if it is in 2WD and the hub is unlocked, won't the CV be stationary and therefor not make any noise?
