3.0l TD 2011 patrol 2nd fuel filter
Hi all, i have just bought a 2011 GU7 Patrol, 3.0L TD. I have read somewhere that it is advisable to fit a 2nd filter to help trap any water in the fuel. A few forums are debating on the correct filter micron size. I have no idea which kit to buy and would love some insight from other Patrol drivers.
I have also been told it would be a good idea to fit a bigger exhaust 3" to help with breathing. Is this correct? and are there other mods that you guys suggest to improve fuel consumption/Power and reliability.
TIA

Hi Dean and welcome to the forum can you pop over to the intros
and tell us a bit about yourself before asking questions.
No harm done but just something the forum asks of us all
As for your problem I think fitting an extra filter is no good
and I think its not a good idea for TD motors,
Heaps of things you can do,,,, get a re'map, or fit a chip
First Id buy a Scan Gauge for a CRD, egr block is also a good idea

Hi Dean
I have 2 pre filters 1 for the transfer pump from the sub tank to main
the 2nd one (with inline booster pump) for Main to OEM filter
Both filters are the CAV/Ryco type
Since I did a chop and streach I have room under the tray to fit them
You would have to fit it (filter and in line pump under the bonet near the brake booster
I chnge the Main filter every 5,000km and swap it for the Sub filter and every time find a 1/2 T spoon of water and grit in both
Hve had the set up since new and now have done 60,000km
Hope this helps

No worries sorry for that i will pop over there now and introduce my self.
A lot of people have told me the 2nd filter is a good idea, as water is a killer of CRD motors. Can you tell me why you think its not a good idea.
I have already thought about blocking the EGR , and will look at chips later when i have the coin.
Cheers

Thanks Joe for the helpful info. Your CAV type filter do you know what Micron filter that is? Ive been told that most are 30 microns which for a CRD is to large.
Also does your pre filter have a drain on it for the water? 1/2 a spoonful of water every 5,000klms seems a lot to me, but what do i know lol.
Cheers

Strewth... I would be changing Servos that I get my fuel from.
That is seriously shitty fuel
Pre-filter... depends a bit on your fuel source IE farm drum stocks, servo, servo just after a flood.
Common useage thru Servos then no need IMHO as the CRD Filters are smaller micron anyway.
IIRC previous service interval was 40,000 K's on Fuel Filters

Cheers evil, yeah the research i have done seems to indicate that for a pre filter to be effective it has to be about 5 microns, which can reduce flow to the motor. The myth i had heard from other Patrol users were that these water traps were a must.
Not so sure now after doing a bit of reading on it.
How about fitting a 3" exhaust? will it be any improvement in performance or would a chip be money better spent?

Oh sorry with regards to fuel, all of my fuel will be from servos. I dont go four wheel driving so hopefully i can not get a dodgy servo along the way.

Patrol Guru
Hi Dean. I had 5 micron pre filter on my crd but it was too restrictive. Have since taken it off and patrol runs much better. I did not have a lift pump so the engines pump was trying to suck fuel through two filters. From my experience you would need a lift pump as well as extra filter. Problem is that there isn't a lot of room under the bonnet.
The standard fuel filter has a water trap and water watch system inbuilt. If the filter light comes on, stop car and drain filter. People with crd patrols in my club have toured all over Australia without fuel problems. Just be careful which servos you fuel up from and cross your fingers. 😄
