Sounds like a stuffed starter motor to me.

It was starting fine when cold but wouldn't start when hot. Did the engine seem to be turning over slower when it wouldn't start hot?.

Try giving the starter motor a couple of hits with a hammer and see if it starts.

As per the other posts it might have more then 1 problem. Number 1 is the starter.

When it cranks is it a fast crank, or slow like a flat battery. I have had starters fail were they draw a lot of power.

The battery charger voltage when running should be higher ie around 14.4

What is the ignition setup, points or pertronix. If you dont know remove the dissy cap and check. Pertonix can give you grief with low battery volts.

I have also had issues with the coil, failing when hot - gt40r coil. I fixed this by upgrading to pertonix ignition and flame thower coil.
