    TB42 petrol engine, in 1999 Y61 Patrol?

    Hi guys,

Let me introduce here, cause this is my first post. My name is Igor, I live in Dubai, and since I moved to UAE, I got very interested in offroading!

So we decided to buy a used Nissan Patrol, because they seem quite reliable cars, and they are very valued in this part of world.

I found a 1999 Nissan Patrol with 4.2L petrol engine, with carburetor, for a Ok price, since I said the used one are very, but very pricey here!!

    So my first concern is:

    - I couldn't found that this type of engine was ever installed in 1999 Y61 model. I found on Internet that only injection engines, and mostly 4.5L where instaled in that year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_TB_engine)? Is maybe this engine installed later in the car?

    - Second problem is that engine, when is idle sounds like diesel? I read, again on the Internet that this could be a piston problem?

I apologize if my question sounds silly, but I am really not a mechanical guy ))

Kind regards, and thank you for your answers.

G'day mate, the TB42 was only used in the Y60 as far as I'm aware. Happy to be corrected though.

Are you sure that the engine isn't infact a TD42, as that is a diesel? Do you have any photos you can post up?

Hey mate, I guess it's possible that the TB42 was fitted by somebody later in the car's life.
Do you have a photo of the engine bay you could share with us?

...and yeah, there is no diesel engines in passenger cars in UAE. The only manufacturer that had diesel engine in the price list on their official web site in UAE is, now hold your seat,..... Porsche. Cayenne Diesel!!!???

Well in that case, I'd go with what Winnie said, TB42 has been fitted sometime during its life

As I thought. Thank you so much guys for your help, you saved me some money. Just canceled the deal! Anyway guy was very confused when I asked him if the engine was fitted later? He said that he has to check, and he is first owner,... blah, blah, blah...!? And on the other hand car was much cheaper than this year model usually is! So it was "smelly" from the beginning!!

Anyway, thank you so much for your help guys!

First post... I have the same vehicle, a Y61 fitted with a TB42. They are rare and not listed on any of the production info pages, but I suspect they are a special run for predominantly Government, developing country markets. Mine was originally supplied by the UN as an ambulance. It has very basic features. In the process of trying to fix it up, hence joining this forum.
