Update:
I've sort of given up on this project now because just about every Patrol I've been to inspect has some form of major rust in it. One guy was even asking $8k for one with both roof rear corners and the passenger side rear slider window eaten away that badly you could see into the cabin. I could go the way of the GQ 2.8LTD but with the price of these still hanging around the $10-15k mark, it just isn't logical.
I've researched and decided instead to drop a V8 into the Surf which will set me back less (about $6K) than what it would take to purchase a Patrol. The only decision left now is whether to go with the 1UZ-FE or 350/LS1. All adaptors for the 350 will set me back around $2.5k and the engine around the $3-4k mark. The 1UZ-FE is about $1.2k for a half cut but there is a lot more work involved in setting it up. Compare that to buying a rust-free Patrol and dropping in a 400hp $4.5k RB30DET and you will understand that it just isn't a financially sound investment or practical.
Trying to find a good Patrol for under the cost of converting the Surf seems to be unlikely, and I've had enough of travelling to see these "excellent condition" Patrols only to be faced with another disappointing example.
Decisions, decisions.
Thanks for the interest and help guys.

I have seen a few nice rd28 gq patrols about with blown up motors cheap enough actually i have bought two of them lol keep looking .
You just have to have the cash waiting and jump on them as soon as they pop up.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
