Air inlet check and clean
After reading about EGR and oil breather pipe set up,I decided to check the state of my inlet.
So I took the intercooler off and removed the inlet pipes.
The pipes had a slight oily layer on them and the intercooler was pretty clean on the inside.
However, the throttle body had a thick deposit on the left inlet port, the right was rather clean.
So I removed it and checked the inlet manifold.
It was my intention to remove the manifold, but to be honest, I could not be bothered as some of the bolts are really awkward to get to.

Once the throttle body was removed, I noticed that the inlet manifold had a layer of tar like gunk.
I cleaned as much out as I could without removing the inlet manifold, not an easy task.
So my next job will be to install a oil catch can, then gauges and egr blanking plate.
Was thinking, that 2 catch cans in series would be even better than one, as it would stop any vaporised oil getting in there.

This if from inside the inlet manifold, there were even lumps in there.
It is not perfect and I could not get all the way in without removing it, but I hope I got most of the thick stuff off.

So after seeing this, I think a catch can and gauges are a must, followed by the rest of the mods.
What would be the best gauges? there seem to be a few options, but which are best?

Is you car a Di or CRD? How many km's has it done?
I have a Redarc EGT and Boost gauge as well as a Scangauge (CRD only). Hardest part is not to look at the gauges for too long.
Redarc are expensive ($399) but they are a quality bit of gear. They also have an alarm you can set at particular temps (default is 600 degree Celsius) so that you don't need to have your eyes on the gauge all the time. When the alarm is triggered the dial turns red so its another indicator that you are near your chosen limit.

How's the serenity
Gauges I have autometer (USA) sportcomp series and am so disappointed in them I regret not getting VDO now. With a catch can get a provent 200, they are great. Block that EGR pipe soon as you can also.
The price of excellence is dicipline , the cost of mediocrity is dissapointment .

Car is a Di, 2005 with 157000 km on the clock
I will block the EGR once I have done the gauges.

Exhaust system fitted ? what engine oil you using in it ?

Stock standard.
Only had it a month! I changed to Castrol as soon as I got it!
