every now and then I go to start the rig and it knocks rather bad and idles really rough for a few seconds then comes good, I have noticed the check engine light and glow plug light flashes on and off a few times as well but Unsure if this is due to the low revs whilst it's having its moment or not.
Also I'm unsure if it's related but every now and then when I turn it off it 'runs on' for a few seconds coughing and spluttering and then shuts down.
Check the earth connections for the ECU. They are on the driver side of the engine, E266 and E267 in the picture. Make sure they are clean and tight.
It could also be a faulty ECU relay. The ECU relay is the one on the top right, above the fuse box inside the vehicle. Try swapping this relay with one of the same colour. From memory I think it's a blue relay.
