What do I buy.

Hi all
Don't know if this is posted in the right spot but here it goes.

In a month or so I am looking to buy a newer model Patrol. We have a 89 GQ which we are keeping but I want another later model. Info please: I would really prefer petrol to diesel. It doesn't have to have a lift kit or any major aftermarket fit outs. Normal stuff like a bull bar and spotties would be nice--roof rack, side steps and awning also. I would prefer not to have a turbo also.

What I am asking is what year should I be looking for, as I have heard some bad reports on later models with engine problems etc. Earlier models so I have heard have better engines. ??

I will not be taking it off road except to go camping up the beach, otherwise it will be my everyday car.

Some info and advice would be much appreciated guys.

So you want another GQ? What size petrol engine? the RB30 or the TB42?

or a GU with the TB45 or TB48 engine?

what bad reports are you hearing?

The only bad thing about patrols is their fuel economy and they don't like gas too much but then again other don't have an issue on gas

Hands down the 4.8.
Better technology, better fuel efficiency and more power.

LPG is the only issue on the 4.8's. Unless the engine is properly setup it can prematurely age them, I know of several including mine where the engine was end of life in the early to mid 200000km.

Not on LPG it will be a great engine. They are bloody thirsty, but reliable. Every issue ive ever had can be traced back to the LPG.

Whar ever you decide on make sure you have History, history, history,
a 4.8 has power to burn if needed, personally I wouldnt buy on on gas with the price they ask these days.
If you go diesel , a 4.2 TD will cost you a mint if you can find one, A few guys here are selling GQ with a 4.2 diesel
that wont break the bank, Or go the 2.8 GU no rocket ship but reliable

That list means either a Petty 4.5 or 4.8 and, yeah, I wouldn't touch one that had bigger kilometres that was gassed.

If it is only around town and up the beach then either will do the job but the 4.8 is definitely the nicest drive of any GU.

Love the 4.8 gus. With dad having owned a 4.5, and now a 4.8, I love the 4.8.

Economy wise, very similar to each other. When empty, the 4.8 is much better, but there is nothing wrong with the 4.5

But when towing........ The 4.8 is king. I towed my go back from Fraser, a 5hr drive, and I went the back way, so a few hills etc..... Sat on 100-110 the whole way, still able to overtake when needed, occasionally had to drop it back to 4th for some hills (yes yes the towing debate, I personally have no problem towing in 5th, even a heavy load) (also come to think of it shouldn't have been going that fast with a car trailer, but it was a well built trailer, I maintained huge gaps in traffic, and eased off well before any corners.)

But anyway. I have never driven a car that I would prefer to tow with.

There's also a number of God mods for the 4.8. The next time I'm due for a clutch be getting the 5th gear upgraded alongside a reduction gear in the transfer case.

I love the car. LPG is a false economy so don't go there.
