    4.2L v's 3.0L?

Hi I'm a newbie to 4x4's but I'm keen to lay my hands on a Nissan Patrol st or dx.
problem is I've been told to stay clear of the 3.0L versions as they just don't give enough grunt?
    I prefer new but there hasn't been a 4.2L since 2006!
Can you do anything to the new 3.0L to power them up or should I buy a good 2nd hand 4.2 & spend some money doing it up?

    All advice appreciated
    Shane'o

    Welcome, Shane'O.
That is a no brainer... 4.2 is King. ( or Queen)
By opening that can of worms you might as well compare GQ and GU
    KATROL- The 2nd
    GU TD42TGi
Not as pretty, but a whole lot tougher

    Welcome aboard Shane'O,
I bought a brand new 3lt a few years back, and I've put in quite a bit of love into it.
There's not much you can do for power but there are things to help unlock a few extra horses.
It seems they have emphysema and need help to breathe better. Lol.
A snorkel and K&N air filter
2-3/4 or 3" mandrel bent exhaust
Power chip (mine is a DPChip)
    Intercooler upgrade.
2011 GU8 ST 3.0 CRD, ARB Bullbar with IPF spotties, scrub bars and side steps, Snorkel, Dual Battery system, Waeco fridge, Turbo Timer, ARB Roof Rack with 5 IPF spotties across the front, Custom full Leather Bucket seats, DPchip, 3" Taipan exhaust, ARE Intercooler & scoop, Autron EGT/Boost and dual volt gauges, ARB front locker.

there is a some variables with what you are asking 1 are you going to tow something very heavy 2 what do you want to use it for tourer off roader but unless you want to tow something getting over 2 1/2 ton I would suggest a 4.2 anything else a 3l crd as the 4.2 is a dinosaur motor and the best you can get is something that's almost 9 years old for a ridiculous price
07 crd,,bridgestone 697lt, 2.75 buedesert ex, SOLD theres a lot of my blood, sweat and money in that troll.

92 gq ti tb42efi my brothers gq extractors dual batteries brake controller uhf alloy bullbar SOLD with a heavy heart but gone to a nice young fella

Don't plan to tow anything heavy except a small dinghy.
Touring mainly for now but light off road stuff to start with.

    what kevin is saying is

if your towing alot - say 2 tonne all the time - go the 4.2............. all day any day
if your NOT towing, dont waste your coin on something old (4.2) - go the 3.0l

in standard form - 2006 GU with 4.2 Turbo & Intercooler is about 116Kw
in standard form - 2008 GU with 3.0CDR is about 122+kw
Tidy Whitey - 99 GU TD42Ti - Diesel Gas, (GUIV Turbo & Intercooler 8Lb boost), 33" Micky T's Baja MTZ's, Dual Batt's, Cargo Barrier, rear draws, HID Super Oscars, winch, Grinch & witch attached and more goodies to come

Welcome on board, m8. I prefer 4.2, 6 cylinders is always a better choice to me....
    Great journeys start at 0.
