nissan patrol y61 engine swap with mercedes om606 3.0l turbo diesel

A brief intro... am planning on overlanding about 6000km in africa and i love the patrol y61 but hate the "hand granade" 3.0td used in them in uk. For reliability am thinking on the following
    1. Swap the engine with the trusted and very reliable om606 engine that will get tuned to 300 - 400bhp and about 500 ib ft torque
    2. I would prefer to use the patrol RE4R03A AUTOBOX cos i'v heard that can handle high torque and are reliable

Please be gentle in case you think i should be cast to hell for such suggestions...

I noticed the autobox has a detachable bellhousing, and the gearbox mated to the om6xx engines also have a bellhousing which i think could be attached with a plate adaptor.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Would the nissan autobox handle such power? Does anyone think it is workable or not...

Welcome to the forum. My experience with engine swaps is that they are not reliable at all - in the short term anyway. There are always gremlins and such that need to be sorted out. Also, if you are going on trips to remote areas it just makes things harder to repair and source parts for if something does go wrong. For a very small cost and a small amount of labour you can grenade proof your ZD30. Many of us here in Australia have these engines and we travel into some of the harshest and most remote terrain in the world with no problem. Have a look at the NADS topics on the forum and I'm sure you will find a solution.

I have gone through the NADS topic and the feed back i first hand from those using the zd30 engine in zimbabwewas not good at all... they love their toyota landcruiser 80 series in that region. I prefer the patrol cos of its size and its a newer model than the 80 series... i feel the zd30 is underpowered to haul a fully loaded patrol over various terrains ranging from muddy to rocky to grassland in the games reserve... i knkw the om606 engine is super reliable.
It would help if those on the forum could post pictures of the 4/5 speed RE4R03A Bellhousing.. i know if i sort out the bellhousing issues all other parts would be standard patrol transmission parts... the td42 engines are like chicken teeth in england

    Mate,

There has been a few 3.0 Litre Di Patrols go around the world with virtually no issues at all.

Check out these guys, as they went around for two years, with an alternator failure as the only real issue .... fully loaded, 35" tyres......
