Toad,
It depends what areas you are looking for, but in Vic, the Rooftop Maps, are the best, followed by VicMaps.

Yeah chasing the upper Hunter since that's where I am. Once I've got some experience up would love to do some over nighters etc

The Rooftop Map series are expanding their range, and the last time I looked they had new maps in southern NSW, but I am not sure that they go up to the Hunter yet....
You could also try a couple of these trek books ..... I have used the Vic ones in the past, but can't give you any info on the NSW ones
4WD Treks Close to Sydney Perfect Bound Boiling Billing
Make Trax 4WD New South Wales AFN Spiral
New South Wales 4WD Top 50 Atlas and Guide Hema

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
