new engine or not?
Hello fellow Patrol owners! Very new to this site and bit of a novice about cars. I'm hoping for your opinions and advice. We own a 2003 Patrol, turbo 3L diesel with 170k on it. We had to replace the fuel pump approx. 5 years ago. Now it is hard to start, blows smoke (black to start, changes to white) and is generally not sounding well. Hubby thinks a new engine is what's needed but I've been asking around and both mechanics and our owner friends don't think the engine should need replacing with only that many k's on it. What do you all think?

Hows is your fuel and air system? White smoke and black smoke can be caused by a loss of compression, damaged injectors amongst other things
There is some good reading here: http://www.dieselsmoke.com.au/
