is this a suitable recovery point

    hi,

wondering if this (photo) is a suitable recovery point? Welded to chassis on 3 edges and has a high tensile 8,8 bolt through holding the bull bar on and body mounted to the top of it.

I would say definitely no by the look of it mate, I would not use it, one strong yank with a snatch strap and that would be it.

wow, I thought it would be quite strong! So do I really need something bolted to the 3 chassis holes on the other side? Presumably it wouldn't be good to attach a winch hook to either (from another vehicle or pully block).

No. Definitely not for a full on revcovery. It is actually the body mount that has been extended slightly for a Tie Down

It's the shipping tie down point for when the Truck is secured on the Car Carrier and the addition of the bolt doesn't do much because there was a fatality last year when an entire Bullbar flew off and killed a female onlooker.
Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

Well done for asking mate, good to see that you are aware of the safety aspects of recovery.

Definitely worth asking mate - and the answer is NO, NO, NO ... as per above, it looks to be an extended tie down point - good for keepin the car stable on the ship on the way over, bad for recovery!!!!!

Problem with a dodgy recovery point is that it will not worry you much if it breaks - but the good sammaritan will cop it through his rear window - through the back of his head rest - and out through the windscreen - with bits of his head attached! Worse case of course, but we need to be careful. Proper recovery points are readilly available at all good 4WD shops for around the $20 mark. Why risk it?
