I do get what you’re saying John-TD Mate but I’ve been running two of them (one ute/one wagon) for maybe 3-4 years now and original advisors of them finding trouble free too for decades I believe?
The rough hack handling low potential of the clip bending for me far outweighs other similar options getting mud clogged mechanisms and rendered useless when in desperate need out there.
Eliminating Bow Shackles and simply connecting these great big hooks direct to tree trunk protectors (both ends at once) has been a thankful honest game changer for us

Got some prep work done today to finish off the winch tomorrow. Drilling into the drum there must be two parts. The drum must rotate on another shaft. So I drilled and tapped then rotated the drum to clear the inner shaft (this doesn't move)shortened the bolt to suit and it works. Dummy fit to make sure that it all lines up and painted the plate black. Will weld in the plate, attached the rope and bolt up the fairlead.

Make sure that bolt thread length is only enough for the eye and the thread in the drum mate. The brake is inside the drum so the bolt must not protrude through. Just in case you weren’t aware....

Coming along real nice though John. Are you going to get the bar sandblasted and powder coated when your done.

Yeah, I worked out that bit after I drilled. I span the drum to clear the hole in the brake. I might take a little more off the bolt,

Not going to do anything about paint. A new paint job on just the bar won't suit the rest of the car.

    Job done

Good from far far from good, but hey it works. I know that I said that I wasn't going to paint the bar, but the paint blistered after welding in the plate. Had some black paint and touched up that area and it looked pretty good, so I washed down the whole bar with some mineral turps and gave it a fresh coat.

Now we really need to go on another weekend away so I can tension the rope.

Still need to sort out a winch switch on the bar and get some wires up to that roof console, but that's for another time.
