    Gu steering box upgrade

    Hi all

Will be upgrading my gq steering box to a gu one shortly. As I understand the only thing required for this mod is a new drag link with a gu tie rod to suit the pitman arm taper. My question is will the gq pitman arm fit the gu box? This will make for a straight forward swap plus will save some coin as I still have the original drag link.

I also have a front panhard mount bracket in the shed with bolts and what not, and looking at the bolts, appears that the bracket doesn't sit flush on the chassis. If someone has this bracket fitted to their gq's, can they confirm this? Or take a pic?

    Thanks all

    Andy

Pitman arms wont fit, the out put shaft on the GU box is bigger than the Gq

The panhard mount bracket?? The one that uses the steering box bolts and the top panhard bolt

Thanks Ben, I'll take a photo of it when I get home, but yes, uses the steering box bolts and panhard bolt to mount.

Did you buy that bracket or it was on the car when you bought it.
Those brackets are a result of a product recall with the series 1 GQs, to strengthen the panhard mount as they were not up to the task from factory

Patrol didn't have that bracket when I got it, I think my patrol has the upgraded mount. But I bought the bracket anyway just to beef it up. While I remember I will go take a pic of it and the bolts to explain what I mean about the gap thing.

Here's the bracket and also a pic of the bolts which are very unique. If anyone has this fitted can they confirm that there is a gap between the bracket and chassis?

Mate i will be interested in how you go with that bracket,i have just done a rd28 to td42 conversion in my gq i had a 1989 gq with the bracket which i removed and tried to fit it onto my car which is a 1994 gq and there was no way in hell it was going to fit, unless i grind out the part that mounts over the panard end, good luck.

I'll let you know how I go roscoe.

I found this thread which has a pic of the bracket fitted and also the factory strengthened mount(welded). I'm just curious if anyone has a photo of the mount without the bolt on brace or the factory strengthened mount.

Fitted the gu box today and it has made an amazing difference to the steering feel. Very direct and responsive, don't need to spin the wheel a hundred times when going around a round about.

Also tried to fit the panhard brace and it doesn't fit. The panhard mount is too wide and the bracket doesn't fit over it. I could probably modify the brace to fit, but maybe my chassis is the newer version any way? If someone who has the old style chassis could share a pic of their front panhard mount id be very grateful!
