Air cooled or slow revving like the drz. The new crop of high performance 4 strokes require quite a bit of maintenance. If you can find an xr400 would be absolutely ideal. On a side note the last time honda made a 2 stroke motorcycle was 2007.

Several of my son’s mates have had the ‘modern’ high performance 4 strokes & I agree they are high maintenance. More often than not - ride at the weekend & fix for the following weekend, but they were racing. Go like Sh*t off a shovel, instant power in abundance - break traction at any speed/gear, but rev high & in many ways more like a 2 stroke to ride than the older air cooled 4 strokes. I had an XR350 (forerunner to the XR400) & it was a great bike. However it depends on how big you are as to how well it suits. I loved it’s hill climbing ability, but having to pick it up on the side of hills was a chore I sometimes tired of. Both it’s weight & seat height saw my (then) 55kg body struggling. An XR 250 would have been better in many circumstances. Apart from that the 350 was a great bike, even good on bitumen with knobbies! (One of the best ‘road rides’ of my life was on the XR350 from Licola to Heyfield). I also had an XR 200 which was always better when the going got tight & was a very capable little bike which couldn’t be killed. The DRZ 250 I took around Australia was a good choice for the purpose, but it’s quality was not up to the Hondas. The few off road 2 strokes I’ve had were a variety of different sized TY yamahas, their heavy flywheels making them more like a 4 stroke to ride.

Love my drz400 great on road robust service oil every 1500km and filters event 3000km. Tourqe for hills fast enough and are known for reliability so are the xr Hondas" drz400 are liquid cooled vs xr air cooled.

Xr 400 for me. They go good! Can idle around like a tractor all day or hold them flat stick and break bones!!
1000s of ks between any decent service.
They don't need electric start as they start beautifully unless they been upside down and flooded!
