    Garrett Questions

Firstly dont shun me for posting this without using the search bar i have searched bucket loads so far on turbos to suit my GQ and cant find the answers i need.

tied between the gt2860 and the gt2871r

both come in a .64 and .86 hot side

both fall in the same price range $1200-1500

i have a 30,000k TD42 with a new GQ 10mm pump and when i rebuilt it i used pistons to suit turbo aplication.

as well as being my daily driver i also tow an open air car trailer with my wingless sprintcar (maybe 1.8T) and the question i need answering is will i ring the neck of a disco potato doing alot of towing? would it be work going to the bigger rear housing on a 2860? or going the small housing on a 2871r? or going the big housing on a 2871r?

i understand from what iv read the 2871 can be painful and wont get the full benifit from my little pump. but im asuming it will still make power and i will probably look to upgrade the pump in future but for the time being it will stay.

iv also looked at the gtx2863 and matt from UFI does his td05-18g these are both great options but they fall in another price bracket and thats not where im really looking at this point in time.

any information from people who have used the 2860 in a towing aplication or have used both turbos your feedback is appreciated.

    thanks Casey

Your pump is too small for the 2871. I have the GTX2863 and it is awesome, I love it. It's on a worn out 11mm pump so when I manage to upgrade my pump it will be even better.
From what I know, the 2863 is just the new and improved version of the 2860. How improved it is I cannot compare.

Yea I'm just deterred by the fact that you have to buy the rear housing as well for the gtx and that starts to blow the budget I think the GTX can take a truck load more boost than the 2860 I'd probably only be looking at 14-15psi like I said I just think I need more grunt in the 2200 to 2700 range and I'm scared il cook a 2860 and towing with it.

The .64 will get it boosting earlier and with the 2860 will be good for your desired boost pressure. The .84 will be lazier but will work a little better up top and by up top I mean from 3000rpm upwards. The 0.64 might start to lose a little once getting past 3000rpm.

A 2871 is as you said painful to get working well and really requires a smaller housing than a .64 to help it along. Also it will require more fuel to get it firing up.

If you are wanting to tow mate the 2860 is a good little turbo. Failing all this save your penny's and get a gtx2863 or UFI 18g both will give you great results once you upgrade the pump and throw an intercooler on.
