    Td42, silver top or blacktop?

    Hi all

    Have searched to no avail.

How do you tell the difference between the blacktop and silvertop motors?

And which of the 2 was put in the gu's?

    Cheers

Rocker cover is either Silver or Black. The Blacks came out in the later GQs and All the GUs.

The Silver top is the pic though.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.

Both are very strong, but the Silver Top, and later Turbo Black Tops, are stronger. The Silver Top had larger stronger Gudgeon Pins, and heavier pistons, and as such were a little lazier, but handle a bit more boost and modification.

The earlier Black Tops were made slightly lighter internally, to make them a little more refined and car like ( Toyota like )

Silvertop and N/A blacktop 28mm gudgeons, Factory turbo black top 30mm gudgeons.

    Statisically order of strength is:
    - Factory turbo blacktop
    - Silvertop
    - N/A blacktop

The only real difference with na black and silver top is the pistons. Many people will tell you that NA black top piston are weak. They are just weaker than the silver top, but they arnt a weak piston..
I have been running more boost on my factory NA blacktop for years now, the majority of that time over 20psi. Now at over 30psi they still havnt cracked.

Edit.... I hope my pistons let go before the crank does anyway, at least I can limp home

I was also told the vac pump is in a different position, silver top are off the alternator and black tops are near injector pump, is this correct or am I being told stories?
