Question Best turbo setup for towing.

Hi Guys, I couldn't find a thread on this so here goes.

What would be the best aftermarket turbo package for an 89 GQ TD42 (non-turbo).

Will be using it to tow a 4x4 camper trailer but also use it as an everyday driver.

I want a bit of extra power but not something that is going to burn a hole in my pocket or wear down the motor prematurely. 14-20psi?

The rigs done approx. 330,000kms. brand new exedy heavy duty clutch, just had the front wheel hubs replaced new brakes all round and major service including head gaskets.

Sorry for the guys that have answered this question 1000 times.

    Any help would be appreciated.

G'day Aza, hopefully one of the more knowledgeable turbo blokes can help out but with my 90 TD42 I simply found a second hand HT18 turbo off a TD42T GU who were upgrading there's.

Only set at 10 psi with the safari tuff clutch and have towed a fair bit without any problems at all. A million times better pulling the camper or our float trailer than naturally aspirated.

Here's my DIY thread on it if you are keen to do it yourself. Not a hard job at all....

Sounds like you want what I was after. Reasonable power increase while not going over the top. I have a GTX2863R running 16 psi and I love it. Tows really well and when I got it tuned it made 120kw.

My 89 GQ TD42 had a Denco / Tubo Dynamics schwitzer turbo with oil cooler and timer fitted in about 91/92 with 7lbs boost and the the pump setup then and never changed. Oil and filters every 500kms and it tows a boat weighing around 2.3 tonnes. Still going strong so soon it will be run in!.

What's fuel economy like? I'd be happy with 14l/100km towing. Cheers
