Outback Travel in Lpg/Petrol... or diesel...
I need some advise. Thinking of doing an outback trip up the centre and possibly the Simpson etc. I have a well capable Auto trans, TB45 petrol/lpg with lockers, winch, new suspension etc but need advise on what fuel consumption will be.....
Has anyone done an outback trip (say Simpson, Cape York etc) with petrol or lpg and can perhaps share their fuel consumption figures.
Helpful info would be:
Litres per 100k used = ??
LPG or Petrol = ??
Cost of fuel = ??
What year you traveled = ??
Could someone who has a diesel say 4.2 also chime in and offer their fuel records.
Thanks guys

factor in fuel figures of $2.50 there is a sort of rule of thumb on what 4x4 used how much fuel.
Ill try and find it and put it here for you, breakdowns can cost up to $25 a k yeah pricey eh
this is from Vic Widmans site fuel usage
V6 petrol===160ltrs
Str 6 and V8=====200ltrs
Diesel==== 140 ltr
This includes your tank
I would take a 20ltr jerry minium as a safety margin
This is Mt Dare to Birdsville only
Most northen gas would be Leigh Creek, but would not be worth putting in at what $1.50 a ltr
Better off ditching the gas in favour of a long range job and drive with care

Enjoying the trips
Not the Simpson but the northern end of the CSR with similar conditions my TD4.2 manual used 20.4 litres per 100 klm, that was 700klm Kunawarritji ($3.40/l) to Halls Creek ($1.75/l) and the worst consumption for the whole trip.
The previous 1150klm we used 19.34 litres per 100klm. Highway was 14 - 17 litre per 100klm depending on road, speed and wind direction.
We were heavy around the 4 tonne mark and took it easy with 15psi front and 25psi rear (cold) on the CSR top half.

Just be aware you can't get gas once you get off the bitumen.

@ bill as I stated I don't think it would be worth putting in TBH, when I went to Birdsville ,
I travelled on petrol only knowing if needed I had 350k of gas to use, you wont save that much as 2-3 tankfulls
will get you "OUTBACK"

From the little book of info..
Filled up with LPG at Leigh creek it is your reserve supply because you can't buy gas any where past their. 4x 20 l jerries choko block full before I left birdsville +95 l in tank never use the gas unless you have to. used 161 from bv to oodnadatta via poolawanna oil drill head waa line lone gum Dalhousie then on to ood. soon as there is room in your tank start putting jerries in to reduce the weight off your roof on them same trip 1hz used 132L.
Roughly 770k travelled that trip.

That's what I did with my presvious 4WD. I used the gas as an emergency reserve once I got off road because I knew I couldn't fill it. I finally bit the bullet and removed the gas tank and put in a 130 Litre fuel tank. Then I got smart and bought a diesel Patrol!
