1996 2.8td rear diff assembly (diff lock)

Replacing all 3 bearings in my rear diff as the pinion bearing had gone.
What's the backlash supposed to be set at? And how do I measure it? Also the pinion bearing, is there a collapsable bearing or spring in there I should know about? And what/how should that be set??
