Yep, wouldn't touch air suspension on them.
The 3.5 seemed a more reliable motor than the 3.9, and was a common conversion into Triumph Stags to replace the unreliable 3.0 V8 they had... Useless little fact there.
And the diesels were slllloooowwwww. Interestingly I had a look at rangies for sale for a few months and I found only 1 diesel that hadn't blown up.

4 speed gearboxes are known to be stronger than the 5 speeds, but I believe on 5 speed models the stronger and better geared LT230 transfer from a Disco 1 is an almost bolt in replacement. Another relatively useless fact there...

And the rear diff on the range rover is noisy second hand diff around 150 apparently

Someone offered me a 89 rangie 4" lift cb brush bars 3 months reg for my 86 mq swb duel fuel dual battery 4 months reg

That seems like a decent swap.
The MK will be stronger in the driveline and more reliable, but the Rangie will be a lot nicer car to drive.
Will it be a daily or a weekend only car?

Both I just need something bigger for the 3 kids really want another gq but ill take the range rover for now I think if the bloke is still keen

The Rangie will definitely take kids better than a shorty Patrol lol.
How old are your kids? Because of the Rangies fairly short wheelbase the rear seats are right over the rear wheel arch, which isn't good for older kids. But on the plus side you'll be comfy.

6 4 & 2 Id even be happy to get a 3 seat for the back of the shorty I've only got a 2 seater

I had a 2 door rangie with the 3.5L v8, fitted with a holly.

Off road it was great, on the road it was slow and drank the juice. - worse then my TB42 GQ. ( especially until I changed the cam - as it had worn a lobe down)

I liked the ride, but the ball and chain used to get sea sick (didn't help when I had a contain of water in the back that used to slosh around. Mine was dual fuel with a internal tank. It was a pain using the fold down seats - but I didn't have ankle biters at the time.

As I had later model seat in her with arm rests - it fun to drive.

I had a petrol gq years ago and briefly considered swapping for a rangie... until I actually drove one from a dealer on the Gold Coast. It sounded nice but was the most gutless thing I had ever driven! It would make my rd28 gu look zippy by comparison. I jumped back in the Q and never looked back. If someone offers to swap one for your patrol there is probably a good reason!
