Dawes valve help
First post so forgive me if this is in the wrong section
I have a Dawes valve ready to fit in a zd30 GU IV. I don't have a boost gauge line because the car has the boost built in and I can get boost from an ECUTalk. I am doing my head in trying to work out where the Dawes valve goes and what I am supposed to connect at the t piece end. I don't have a needle valve, should I? Have looked at various photos but can't get my head around the install because all the install photos have a Boost line from the inter cooler pipes. Any help would be greatly appreciated

O.k quite simple. Yes you should run a needle valve. Why? Because the needle valve lets you control how fast your turbo will spin or spool up which also changes mid range boost.
You should be o.k with ECU talk....
So.
When running just a Dawes follow this... Dawes and needle is a different procedure.
- Find your boost control solenoid ( this is located just after the air box, under the intake pipe. It has three vac lines in it and a wiring loom)
- Remove the middle vac line. This line goes to the VNT diaphragm on the Turbo
- Now you need to pick up some boost pressure for the dawes. Where and how you get your boost pressure is up to you. Anywhere after the turbo and before the intake. Usually from one of the steel pipes going to the IC. I use bulkhead fittings on the steel IC pipe and bronzed them in.
- So once you have gotten your boost, this need to go to the bottom barb fitting on the Dawes. (The larger and single barb) Thats the boost side done.
- The vac line fromthe middle port of the solenoid needs to go into one of the smaller ports on the T section of the Dawes.
- The other port goes around to the VNT diaphragm on the turbo.
- Take her for a spin and adjust.
- Have beer....

Well I though it to be more, erm whats the word? More professional to do it that way. Me on the other hand usually start with step 8 first. And then between each step.
@ Hodge. Thanks for the pat on the back mate. I'm far from a guru though. Theres plenty other who know a crap load more than I do. I'm just paying it forward on what I know.

Thanks mudski, by the way I read it I have tap into that inter cooler pipe anyway. I was hoping I didn't have to. I am OK at following instructions but modifying parts is not something I am particularly good at.

Yeah you have to pick up boost. Most just tap into the IC pipe.

Does anyone sell a modified I/C pipe with the fitting? As mentioned, I am not so good with these things unless there were some straight forward instructions, when someone mentioned bronzing I shuddered as I don't even know what that means.

There is on Ebay a fitting you can buy which mounts on the IC, where the MAP sensor is. It sits in between the MAP (not Maf) and has a barb fitting on it so you can pickup boost.
Can't remember who sells it though. Either that or take the pipe of and take it to an exhaust mob and get them to weld in a bung. Check out my Ebay store,I sell them. They can be used for either exhaust or intake.
