Hereby my introduction. I already upset some people enormously by posting a question before posting my introduction, sorry for that!
I have recently purchased a dec 1997 Nissan Patrol GU 4.5l auto. I am an international student and bought this car because I love going on road trips. I will do weekend trips and planning to do a trip along the coast of Australia (yes the complete coast). This is my first car, do not know anything about cars and I want to learn to do as much myself.
About the car:
The car is a 5-seater with dobbinson shocks and steering dampner, ride pro spring 3" lift, bull bar with winch, compressor, , dash DVD player, UHF, marks 4wd deep reduction in low range 47% and 4.6 diffs front and rear. (still have to read upon what this all exactly means). Lucky for me and my pocket, it runs on LPG and Petrol. At the moment it has MICKY THOMPSON 305/70/16 MTZ which I am planning on selling and buying some coopers AT's.
The big plan:
Getting a roof rack, installing a reverse camera, wiring up the dummy lights, constructing drawers and removable bed, etc. And because I am a student, it will all be on a budget.
I am not sure how much I am able to contribute but I am sure I will learn a lot here.
A photo of the car is attached.
cheers
Danny

Welcome mate and that's a top start.
The reduction low range gears a're exactly that. They have reduced the low range buy 47%.. More used for rock climbing and slow technical stuff. Not really needed for a tourer but will allow nice throttle control when in the shoit..
And the 4.6 is the diff ratios. As you are running larger tyres the rolling distance is more so the gears bring the ratio and speedo back to near Stock..
Anyway heaps of info here and top members to match.
So jump in and enjoy the forum and the car..
Cheers
G'day Danny welcome aboard mate.
Check out the Mickey Thompson ATZ's before you jump at the Coopers. Myself and three others I know personally have had issues with coopers tyres. With any tyre you need to rotate them every 10,000k's I do mine every 5,000
IF YA DONT GET STUCK YA AINT TRYIN HARD ENOUGH........OR YA TOOK THE CHICKEN TRACK WARNING: TOWBALLS USED WITH SNATCHSTRAPS DO KILL!!
G'day Danny.
It sounds like your beast is all ready for the trip, and some "interesting" side roads as well.
Westy's given you the drum on the diff, etc, and with Growler's review of tyres, and the many other support Forums that will help you out here, you will be on the road and cheering pretty soon.

G'day mate, welcome to the forum.
That's a nice looking Patrol you have there with a bunch of mods already done.....
I'd love to have the diff ratio and reduction gears. Very handy in the Vic high country mate. Being a petrol those reduction gears will make up some of the engine braking lost when driving a petrol downhill in L1 on compression rather than a diesel.
Don't hesitate to jump in and enjoy the conversations, many of them aren't that technical and just sh!t talking and piss taking......
