    Changing engine RD28 to TD42 - RTA paperwork

    Hi there,
    I owned GQ with a TD42T engine for a few years and I absolutely loved it, however my missus wanted something more comfortable, so I recently bought a GU with RD28 in it. Now I would like to transfer engine + gearbox and diffs from GQ to GU, but I was wondering if I need to do an engineers report or not. I'm fully aware off all the hassle with the engine swap, but after reading several forum boards I got confused - do I need and engineers report for the swap or not? I know that one of the engine mounts in GU is not matching TD42 so it requires a chassis mount modification/welding. One forum board says I need to get it engineered, but other says I don't since TD42T was an engine that was available in GU. Does anyone have any experience with it?

    Hi mate. We ask all New members to stick up an intro first, a bit about yourself and that..
    My understanding is any chassis mods need engineering cert. So I would play it safe.
    As for diffs, don't bother. The gu diffs and wider and stronger.
    If you engine and gearbox change you need to change the diff center's from the gp, also the drive shafts.

    What's the plan for the GQ though??

    Hi there,
    Sorry for that, my bad. My name is Mike and I'm from Sydney, I've been 4wding for a couple of years now. Started with Toyota Hilux Surf 2.4 TurboDiesel, which had a cracked head within first few months of owning it. In the mean time I looked for something bigger and more capable of 4wding. I manage to buy a cheap 1989 TB42 GQ with a cracked head, fixed it all up, went for a couple of trips and feel in love with TD42 engine, The sound, torque and everything about this engine. Sold my Hilux in the mean time and found another TD42 GQ. I spent money and time on getting 4' lift kit, rocksliders etc, however after 10 months head cracked as I was nearly ready on adding extra turbo kit to it. Got a cheap TD42Ti engine in VIC, went there bought it, swapped it and I was in heaven, until recently, when I found cheap GU RD28 and have decided to get more comfort for my missus and myself. Long story short

    As for the GQ that I've now I will probably strip it for parts and get rid of what I cannot use/sell.
    I'd love to stick with my current diffs as they are 4.11 ratio, have been recently rebuilt, plus not to mention that I have Nissan factory rear difflock.

    Yea when you change the center you'll be taking the lokka with you, but the gu diffs are much better than the GQ. Bigger stronger cv joints, wider track, bigger brakes..
    Just better.
    I thought gu 2.8's come with 3.9's but could be wrong.
    And nit 100% on this one but I seem to remember reading a bloke hit a bump when the 4.2 gearbox drive flanges were bigger then the 2.8 flanges..

    Gu 2.8s come with 4.6

    I was told by my local mechanic that a change of records is all that is needed IF there are no major structural changes (not cutting the chassis rail) because the car came out with that engine as an option.

    Surely the one engine mount could be altered by re drilling or simple mod of the engine bracket so you don't need to use an engineer? The 2.8 has 4.6 ratios in diffs so maybe a change to 35s would fix the gearing issue. Sadly you can't use the gq gearbox but a gu box shouldn't be too expensive. Maybe once you sell of some leftover bits that can provide funds. Wiring harness is the only tricky bit unless you get one made up. Killer Justin kables do them I think.
    The gq exhaust should be pretty close to fitting from memory too.

    hi has someone of you yet done a engine and transmission swap from a 2.8 to a 4.2 with a new nissan Motor if yes how expensive would it be
