1990 Patrol with RB30 and 5 Speed

Hi all, hope this finds you all happy and healthy?

My first time here and am some what of a novice so please be patient with me? (laughs)

I have recently purchased an RB30 which is 3Ltr petrol & gas and done 340,000+ k's
motor is strong and runs well. My issue is when changing down from 4th to 3rd gear box crunch's bad? I have been quoted more to repair than I paid for the whole truck? I've been told that the box out of an 2.8 diesel will go straight in but then told it no it wont?
I'm totally confused as to what to buy to replace existing box?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

g'day steviej a good start would be to pop over to the intro thread and introduce yourself its just a thing we ask new members to do, as for your gearbox I am sure someone will be along to give you a hand if not have some advice
