Anyone else noticed that it's hard to get fresh non imported garlic from the supermarket? Plenty from china, but it's tasteless

The key word there is "supermarket". I shop at a smaller grocery store that has local products so I can support Tassie farmers and also the product is way nicer. The imported garlic is about $4-5 a kg and the local is around $25 per kg but I still go for the local. Get so sick of people that shop on price alone and complain that theres no aussie jobs.
BUY LOCAL EVERYONE:-)

All well and good if you have the space..
Look for local vege patches..
There will be something around.
If not small window boxes can grow smaller things like herbs.
A half wine barrels make awesome small patches and look nice..
But yes, ditch the supermarkets and buy local. Local shops and local markets..

I read, somewhere, that some of the imported stuff is bleached using poisonous chemicals. I have some Aussie garlic cloves, I bought at Safeway, packed by Australian Gourmet Pastes. For some reason, we have trouble growing garlic and lemon trees on my property. (Must be soil type, will have to research it more.)
My advice is: not to follow my advice.
