RB30 mated to TB42 gearbox, Is a conversion available?

G,day all. Well it has been confirmed, a bearing in the gearbox is knackered, and the transfer case is ready to chuck a wobbly. I have found a 4.2 unit, for $800. Is there a conversion plate available to fit to the heavier box? If not, has anyone got a good, complete standard unit, for sale?
    Cheers mudnut.

Patrolapart has quoted me $900 dollars for a standard unit. And $995 partial reco box plus $250 transfer case. The bloke said that 5th gear usually lets go, and that new replacement parts are unavailable. They strip a number of gearboxes and use the less worn parts, hence the partial reco. Both have only a 3 month warranty. Add $500 freight, (I have to send my knackered box back). If a conversion plate is available I would like to go down that path, because I will tow a lot, and flog the guts out of it occasionally. Also parts are more readily available. I am now trying to decide on which heavy duty clutch unit to buy.

Is this for the gq or something else.? http://compare.ebay.com.au/like/2207...=220730838668#

I have yet to find any upgrades for the smaller gearbox., or any chance of converting to a heavier box. Two rebuilders reckon obtaining good quality gears is next to impossible. One bloke quoted me a heavy duty Valeo Japanese clutch kit at $195, and another $420 for an Exceedy (formally Daeken). Big difference

Wow, 3 posts in a row, I'm talking to myself.

Still muttering to myself. I have found a gear box mob in the U.S. that sell new gear components for the FS5R30 box, so someone is pulling my chain about sourcing them. A racing forum in the UK talked about upgraded boxes, R32 to r33, but I don't know if that will help me. I got the courage up to show my lovely wife the grand total for a second hand gear box with new rear engine seal spigot bearing, heavy duty clutch, flywheel machining and labour. Yeowcch! She has agreed, in principle, that it would be no good, because I would be too afraid to use it, in case the box karked it again. So I'll get back on the net and look for different options. I may even search for a donor vehicle. I was hoping for the combination of the unkillable Rb30 with a heavy duty gear box, as I already have a gu diff fitted.

Im pretty sure ive heard of people putting the AUTO off a tb42 behind an RB30. Maybe see if Wholesale Automatics have heard of that. That may be the first step in finding out if you can do the same with a manual box.

The gearbox behind the RB30 is a very strong box, I believe the gearset is very similar if not the same as R32 GTR. I've seen many threads written by people who have fitted RB25/30 turbo engines in front of the same gearbox and absolutely flogged the hell out of them before breaking the gearbox, so a carby RB30 shouldn't stress it too much at all.

The turbo efi rb30 in a commohore, or skyline, would have the fs5r30 box factory fitted, wouldn't they? They have a heap of ponies more than mine, but don't have to haul 3000kgs up a muddy mountain. I suppose it just could be the bearings in my gearbox, that have gone, with age. The mechanic I have chosen to do the work, has said that the crunching in second is because the nulon oil I was told was correct, is too thick, and can be diluted with atf. Hmm. Decisions, decisions...

    Mudnut,

I haven't heard of anyone mating the 4.2box to the RB30, but i have seen the RB30 box flogged to within an inch of its life, pushing big tyres and doing impossible climbs.....seemed to handle it all ok.
