O.k the name "Dawes" valve came from a bloke in the U.S, Darren Dawes, who invented this wonderfull little valve for VNT, or vacuum operated turbo's. In a nutshell, what this valve does is take away the ECU's ability to control the boost levels. The ECU in your Patrol isn't very smart at controlling boost levels, and therefor you would experience limp mode.
So the Dawes valve is a little mechanical valve which is installed in the vacuum system on the engine and you say bye bye to the ecu's control. But, you need a boost gauge installed first before the Dawes is installed so you know what pressure to set the Dawes at.
The Dawes valve can be installed on just about any vacuum operated turbo, Patrols, VW's and Tritons, to have the final say on how much boost you want.
Cheers.

Then after the Dawes is the Needle valve installation. The needle valve allow you to control the spool up rate of the turbo, or how fast the turbo will spin up when you put your foot down. This is where it gets fun with playing around...

NO the Dawes is spring loaded ,the needle valve basically a small tap to allow small/fine adjustment

ONE BIG COMMENT FOR ALL THOSE WITH A CRD, is that on a CRD set up the Dawes valve and the like, take full control from the ECU, WHICH, actually ramps the boost all the way up to 25 PSI when cruising between 49 and 53% engine load to allow for lean mixtures and good fuel economy. Likewise, the ECU lowers boost to under high load conditions to allow for higher power output. The CRD ECU VNT control, on my bus is spot on, but you do need to adjust the VNT stop screw to stop surge at 2000 RPM if you do not have the EGR blocked. My bus makes steady linear boost and i have no problems with limp mode unless i go up a constant hill for like 4 minutes, which never happens here, and i make 15 psi of boost at 2200 rpm and 12 psi at 1500 rpm all day long.
Under stock ECU control i have seen boost as high as 25 PSI.

Best thing you can do, Sounds a bit old school driving by your gauges, but better that than a light come on to tell you the games over.
You'll thank yourself that you did it plus you'll know your motor a bit better, Your model has a vacuum canister on it , but I think this can be by passed.
Mudski has same year so may know more. BTW how are you doing your gauges via pillar pod or dash pod???

On the pillar pods you reuse the handle, they look awesome and I find they don't block you vision at all.
