    Diesel knock on light throttle

    I have a n/a TD42 GQ running on 60% svo and diesel, It's done 127,000km

I've done about 10000kms in it since I bought it and it's always had a very slight diesel knock on light throttle such as going downhill on the motorway especially around 2000rpm. It had this even when I ran 100% diesel and I don't think it's really changed with running svo.

When it's pulling, even slightly, or off throttle, it's not there, it sounds really nice in fact. It doesn't black smoke and it runs nicely, it's good on fuel, though I've nothing to compare it to over here in the UK.

I know it's not exactly the pinnacle of technology so it could just be either entirely normal or a little bit of overfuelling maybe due to an injector/injectors and I've owned Land Rovers in the distant past so I never really bothered about it, but I just wondered if anyone had any comments on it, it comparison to their own experience of these engines.

Have you checked for signs of a leaking exhaust gasket?
Mine knocks to but only at idle. Once up to 1000rpm its gone

It's not blowing from the manifold. It does have a bit of a recent leak from the exhaust flexy in the front pipe(it's sooty), but that will be sorted soon when I make up my bigger exhaust system. I'm 99% certain it's diesel knock, it certainly sounds just like that.

I tried to video it but on the motorway the wind and tyre noise wasn't good on my phone so I've got a video of it around town. Maybe someone could have a listen and see if they think it sounds harsh for a TD42.

That's a hard one to tell.. does it do it while stationary?
Imo I'd fix the leak first and see how that goes. diesel leaks can make some odds noises sometimes.

And have you got under the car yet? Checked things like engine and gearbox mounts, maybe your fan? if it sounds odd I'd be looking.

It's definately diesel knock/clatter whatever you want to call it. I've listened to a few vids on youtube of td42's at idle and mine sounds about the same. Its not mechanical, like I say mostly a light diesel knock when on light throttle. Not there under power or on the over-run. It could just be normal. I can't hear it unless the stereo is turned right down when I'm driving but for some reason it bothered me enough to ask on here. I think I might have spent too much time previously driving Skylines and a Navara. In all likelehood if I'd still been driving old Land Rovers like I did years ago I'd probably not even have noticed it.
Thanks for having a listen though

Have you checked out things like the engine mounts and such. Havent sagged to the point there could be metal on metal?

I've found some more youtube vids to listen to and mine sounds fine. It's just the normal sound of a TD42. If anything mine sounds quieter than some of the others. Thanks for the replies though.
