    TD42 Running Temp

    Gday all,

I have not had the GQ TD42 for long and am still familiarizing myself with its performance.

Recently we went away for a weekend with the back full of gear and towing a 4.5m tinny and I was a little surprised with the level the temp guage got too. Normally it sits very much in the bottom quarter of the guage, but on this trip there were a few occassions where the temp went above the 1/2 way point of the standard guage. Most of the time it sat just below 1/2.

Once the load was removed the temps have been back to the normal low readings.

Is this normal or should I be having a look at something?

    Graeme

Similar readings to my TB42E....... But the standard gauges aren't known for being the best. Some of the guys have fitted aftermarket temp gauges to measure spore accurately. Hopefully some of the TD42 owners will chip in soon.

    Don't slap it, tap it!!!!

    How many k's on it?

Personally if it were me I'd probable give the cooling system a good flush, clean radiator and throw in a new thermostat, just for safety sake.

    Yea sounds pretty normal..
But if your car is getting on in its life it wouldn't hurt to have a service and have the radiator cored..

The coolant is a nice green colour which does not look that old.

    G'day again G69
    jeez, you're a busy boy aren't you?
As I said elsewhere I had a TD42 for about 450K and whenever I get a new (2nd hand) set of wheels I do a complete service. The lot. Total. Nothing left out, regardless of claimed, purported service records. Reckon it's worth doing.
Get the most expensive coolant. They're guaranteed for bulk life and I believe worth every cent because it's a total b*t*h to drain, flush and replace but you'll get around 1/4 mil K's no worries.
Your temps are O.K. Diesels work best it seems at a temp. which seems high by some standards but like with HP motorbike engines, the manufacturers fake the temp. guage to show a temp which keeps the punters happy rather than what is really happening with a modern engine.
Sorry I can't tell you if yours is still good but if it is clear and the guage is no more than a tad over 1/2 way max, I reckon you're all good.
After that it depends on the service record and whether you trust it.

Sounds pretty much like mine. Usually in the bottom third of the dial, but occasionally will sit very near the top, especially in summer on a long hill with a heavy trailer or load on.
