I am soooo angry. I had a second hand gearbox and transfer case put in the Old Trol, today. Yes, you heard it, a second hand. I still get a clanging noise when rolling in the lower gears. Same bloody noise!!!! Either the stuffed transfer has stuffed the new diff, or the new case is stuffed, or they put the old unit back in. (I know the mech, so that option is out) But I digress, the bloke at ...... quoted me $840 for the second hand gear box. $420 for the clutch $20 for the seal and $25 for the spigot bearing. Now, the mech was putting the old changed out gearbox into the back of the Trol (or so he says) When the bloke from ......supposedly turned up and said that there is a $400 bond on the gearbox, so it is still there. Not once, in the weeks since I first got the quote, and went in to the store, on no less than 3 occasions did he mention a bond on the gear box. That only happens on an exchange reco!!! Not a freaking second hand unit. Now I know why he wouldn't give me a final amount on Tuesday afternoon. Rant over.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Ok, calmer now, got a full gut and had a hot drink. Has anyone else heard of a bond on a second hand gearbox? If I had of known he was gunna take my old gearbox, I would've driven to Mt Gambier and picked up a complete unit for $1100, from a wrecker.

Yes mate they do it all the time, i personally recommend you get your mechanic to call and tell the supplier to give him another unit coz this one is faulty, and the supplier should pay for labour on the second unit or get the supplier to pay for repairs on the unit he supplied.
You should have a 30 day warranty at a minimum.

Thanks George. So I am just gunna have to sit back and let him take the box. I was told that the clanging noise was the diff, so I swapped it out. Traced it back to the transfer case. Is it possible that the old trans case has wrecked the second diff?

Pretty much mate but i would keep the old box till the warranty expires so you have leverage.
There is no way that i am aware of that a transfer case can wreck a diff, happy to be proven wrong but i doubt it. What are the unis like in the tailshaft??
