Well job's half done. Geez I hate plumbing, it's always a hassle, no wonder plumbers get paid well.
Now have a hole in the hall wall, & found that it is the shower 'breech' itself which is leaking, it appears to have corroded from the inside out. Only one hole, (enlarged as I used pressure to unscrew one of the flared fittings) but a number of other spots looking like they too only had a limited time to go. Am replacing it, but not easy as it is mounted on the shower side of a noggin, & I am attacking it from behind. Any thoughts on the reason for the corrosion in copper? Did I mention I hate plumbing!
G`day Cuppa
The corrosion appears to be at the soldered joint which posers the question as to now good the original job was. Good soldering depends on how clean the joints were and if the joint was fluxed properly. A small bit of dirt , iron filing ,or swarf trapped in the joint can cause electrolysis , rust and corrosion.
Just my thoughts.
By the way we are going through our insurance company

Not just at the soldered joint. Now that I've fitted the new one, I thought I'd look a bit more closely at the old. Not sure what sort of metal it is, but it sure ain't copper. Polishes up on a wire wheel to a brass colour, but I suspect it is a 'pot metal' amalgam. I *very* lightly tapped on the patches of scale with a small bolt & as you can see in the pic, more holes appeared. I think we were lucky to discover it when we did. Would've done a lot of damage if it had let go when we were away.

Not good Andy, all the best. I had a mate almost die, they couldn't believe how big his appendix was without bursting.
He said pain was excruciating.
Emergency surgery and all is well.
