Hey, BA, did you have any warning that the tread was about to depart, or did it just peel off instantaneously?
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

There was a little shudder in the steering and i commented on it only 10min earlier but sometimes after big trips in rough conditions this is not unusual so dismissed it .
The tyre went after i had overtaken a lady who sped up on my left while a car was up my ass so i put my foot into it to get ahead of the car so i ould return to the left lane when it went bang... it was like an explosion and my right ear still hurts.

You're lucky you had a rear bar on it. Mine did much more damage to the car except unbeknownst to me it was a retread tyre and she let go at 110 km/hr between Karijini National Park and Tom Price not a good feeling

No recourse John... thought maybe I could make a claim but not sure I can or is worth it?
I have a mate that gets stupidly good deals on tyres but needed to wait a few more months before I can afford some... this may force my hand as one other tyre has a crack that goes all around the side where the tread meets the sidewall.

When I bought the GUIV in 2009 it had Cooper ST on the car and a Cooper AT 80% on the back door.
In 2010 I did a trip to Beachport SA with the family. Had a great trip. On the last beach on the last day 50m from the gate I hit a rock and smashed my front left rim. Tyre was undamaged but flat. I fitted my spare.
The following day I was traveling home on the Sunday in 42degrees. I was towing my camper with my kids in the back and Naomi was following in my Ute.
At 100km/h my front left let go 5 hours from home.
The front of the car lifted and lost control for a second. I thought I hit a cow or something from the left I had not seen. There was a big flash of something but I had no idea what it was. Scared the sh1t out of me. I regained control and pulled over.
Naomi pulled up behind me, hot out and the front left had fully delaminated but remained inflated. WTF!!!!
Naomi turned around and went and collected the Full a Length Delaminated Tread and put it in the back of the ute.
I drove 120kms on that carcass at 60km/h and limped into Mortlake at 2pm on a Sunday in 42degrees.
Holy Sh1t!!
There was a Cooper Dealer Closed in town. Called him up and a guy came in and Swapped the good tyre off the rooted rim on the door and got me back on the road. My camper was running 35s so I couldn't use that spare.
The COOPER Dealer charged me $120 to swap the tyres over.
The following day I called Cooper Australia. The delaminated tyre was date stamped and 4 years old. (Cooper offer 5 year warranty only, anything over 5 years is to old) happy days I thought?????
No way!! "Obviously it's a different tread pattern to the rest of the car so has not been rotated with the other tyres and has cooked on the back door! Sorry sir we can't warranty that!" "What about the $120 your dealer charged me?" "Sorry sir no warranty. Would you like a free Hat?"
Seriously!!! WTF!!!
Never Ever will I buy a Cooper Tyre again! Ever.
Would you like a free Hat? Not a Farking Chance mate!!! I will tell everyone I meet whenever I can to not buy your rubbish.
Cooper Tyres are JUNK!

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
