    F54 Block & N42 Cyl Head

Can someone tell me more about this L28 engine, i.e. what vehicle it comes from, etc. I have just bought it from a friends fathers friend, that had it in a jeep and aparently did a Stage 2 Van Heerdens conversion on it ??? I am planning to put it in my MQ 160 Safari, any advise, etc. ? Thanks rgds

Stage 2 Van Heerdens conversion - never heard off.

    The l28 was a development o the L24 , L26 & L28 - 2.4 , 2.6 and 2.8 Litre motors.

The l24 & l26? came with SU side draft carbys - heaps of power - but painful to tune. There was a l28EFI version from the ZX280

Thery have also been stoked using a LD28 crank (diesil motor)

I've still got the original L28 & P42 cyl head that was factory installed. This F54, I believe was a diesel block ? My originals head bolts are infused into the cast iron block and I have already broken three trying to get then out, there are seven I think that are stuck and no hope of getting them out, so far. So I bought the F54 from a friends dad's friend that had the eng in a mod Jeep. I am going to open it on Sat and hopefully know more of whats inside?

In this rebuild I am trying to make sure that I only need to do this once and not have to redo things because of ignorance or of having some better choice? I am 60yrs next year and can't do this sort of thing again.

    Any ideas?
    Rgds

Is it worth spending the $$$ on a proper rebuild.

Consider rings, pistons, bearings, gasket kit, timing chain and machaining of the head & block it woul be worth more then the truck.

Any L series L24,L26,L28 should be fine in an MQ /MK .....

The tuffest part is ,to do a proper rebuild can cost plenty, but the L28s are a tuff motor and although can be thirsty can stick it right up the diesel boys when you go turbo
The major problem is the cost to rebuild and a decent rebuild ,there are better later model, more efficient and powerfull motors out there that can be bought, fitted, converted for the price to rebuild the L28
    If my L28 blows,ill probably go to a 90s ford 4 L inline 6

I put a rb30 gq motor in my old MK - mad a big differance - was like going from a l24 to a l28 in power.

Was a lot of work though
