Grinding kind of noise when take off
I have a GQ Patrol 20+years old. 300k on clock. Manual and carby on RB30 motor. The car makes a slight grinding noise when taking off. If it's up the hill take off, the grinding noise is stronger, if I'm taking a bend, the grinding noise is higher as well. If it's flat ground or down the hill take off, less or no noise. Only on first gear(or second gear some times) when picking up.
It's been there for last three years or so.
Do I need to worry about it if I'm going on long trips?
Where is the noise coming from?!
Any help would be great!
Thanks guys

Hard to guess without hearing it. Could it be a seized brake caliper?

Hard to pin-point with that description mate.
Brakes, piece of wire caught, gearbox issues, CV joints, drive-line blah blah.
You need to do some more playing around to isolate the noise and exactly when and how it's occurring. Using words as a noise is hard to describe it with the right words as best you can.
If it's been happening for some time and you are thinking about doing trips, I'd be looking at it now.
06 GU IV Nissan Patrol wagon 3.0L, Tough Dog 2" lift, Xrox bar, 12k Mako winch, 33" muddies, 3" exhaust, Awning, UHF, drawers & fridge, custom sliders, DVDs, custom water tank and pump, rack etc etc.
Now just in - GQ Shorty 4.2 petrol, UHF - but looking at turbo or V8 conversion

Check driveline components like your tailshaft or input shaft to gearbox (Difficult and highly unlikely for length of time) or even rear axle's/bearings. could be flexing too much under load. I am no mechanic but that is one area I would cover after checking callipers and twisted brake lines and thing of the like good luck mate keep us posted.
IMO, any unusual noise is slightly worrying and should be addressed.

Any noise needs addressing, have a mate stand outside listening to find the area .Then go from there

Grinding kind of noise when take off
My GQ did this - felt like a grinding as I took off at slow speeds. I was guessing driveline...
I worried about it for a while but never did end up finding it!

I've been doing trips with the noise. Yeah, I know, not a good idea. I wish I can record the noise and upload here. Ha ha.. just a funny idea, but may become a reality one day?! , I'm sure you guys prefer not to have the forum saturated with grinding and grunting noises of 4WDs. )
It's usually under load it happens. I checked the brakes or wires being caught, but looks pretty good there. Only on 2 wheels, as I don't use this old fella much on 4WD.
My fear is gearbox, CV, diff, etc. I checked the universal joints for play, but looked and felt fine. But, that's not the proper way to check uni joints, right? I removed and both drive shafts and cleaned them, then greased them with a gun. That didn't make a huge difference.
I guess, it's time to put car on stumps and go under it.
BTW mate, Should I eliminate the CV, front bearings, axles, front diff, front drive shaft, transfer box?
It's doing it when on 2 wheels. So, front driveline can't be the cause of this issue?!! Am I right?
Thanks mate.

Hi mate. Brakes and calipers are fine. Yes, I'll be starting from the drive shaft and try to locate the origin of the noise. I'll keep my findings posted.
Cheers
