That's the one. A lot of people get concerned about it, so just putting it out there.

Yes. it is at low revs. except it is not TB42, it's RB30.
It sounds more like a gearbox grumble, judging from the location of the sound.
If that's the case, is that something I need not to worry about at this stage?!

Does it disappear if you change at a higher rpm?

And also, it didn't get any worse over the last few years......rather it got slightly better, after I greased the front ball joints last year. I also did the front hub and bearings as well(repacked them). From memory, it slightly got better after servicing the front ball joints and the bearings. That may be because I improved the lubrication of the front end?!!!

Update
It is a low pitch growling kind of noise that doesn't appear all the time.
90% of the time on first gear on low revs. Disappears as soon as I gain enough speed.
It has been there for last three + years.
It didn't get any worse, rather got little bit better after I did the front ball joint lubrication, hub and bearing repacking. Hub and bearings looked fine, but I repacked them anyway. ball joints were bit short of grease. I also cleaned and greased(with a gun) all the universal joints. I actually took the back driveshaft off to clean if properly and grease it(covered with hard soil).
The noise isn't coming from brakes. rotors machines and pads replaced couple of months ago.
Car has a suspension lift. Not sure whether it's 2" or 4".
I did the test drive the other day on 2WD and 4WD. I couldn't reproduce the noise. It has been like that. Sometime it's there, sometime it isn't.
Any help guys?!
Thanks

Sounds like a 1st gear issue.
How's the gearbox oil?
Does it have auto locking hubs? Maybe the hubs (auto or not) are causing issues at lower speeds. Although mine sounded different to what you describe.
How are the front wheel bearings now, push them sideways firmly at the top, with the brake pedal depressed. They're should be no movement.
How's the diff back-lash? Sounds like a front end issue, but never hurts to check.
Make sure you post what it was
06 GU IV Nissan Patrol wagon 3.0L, Tough Dog 2" lift, Xrox bar, 12k Mako winch, 33" muddies, 3" exhaust, Awning, UHF, drawers & fridge, custom sliders, DVDs, custom water tank and pump, rack etc etc.
Now just in - GQ Shorty 4.2 petrol, UHF - but looking at turbo or V8 conversion

Hi mate,
I was able to reproduce the noise yesterday. I can confirm now it does it in both 1st and 2nd gears. It's less on 2nd gear 'cos once I gained enough speed momentum, it goes away.
I got manual locking hubs. Noise is coming from the gearbox area, both the from the feeling of vibration and direction of the noise.
Wheel bearings are good in my assessment. No play, and no drag.
Can you describe the diff back-lash?
Thanks
