1989 GQ 4.2TD Loud ticking noise from motor
Hi guys, great info on here. Heaps of threads to help solve almost every problem with GQs and other Patrols.
I have searched thru alot of threads in regards to to an issue with my GQ, but nothing answers my query. My motor has developed a loud ticking noise. Sounds like metal contact. From what I have read it could be a lifter or big end bearing? It was reconditioned 60k ago and has run sweet in that time. The noise seems to be coming from the left hand side. It is there when the motor is hot, cold, idling and reving out. It runs fine besides the noise. Have tried the screw driver to ear trick and the noise seems to be in the lower section/ front of motor? Was going to drop the oil and filters and put some Nulon lifter free in and see what happens. Am I wasting my time or what? Anyone one got advice on this issue?

First thing to check is valve clearances. Also have you heard about running 2 stroke oil in your diesel? Made my TD42 run heaps quieter when I added it to mine.
