    4.8 starter motor

    i own a 4.8 and yesterday thought it started strange, but when i went to use it in the arvo, it had died.
    have reconditioned the starter motor and will not crank. you can hear it spinning but thats all. does anyone have any ideas where to look next. have checked battery and made sure leads are on correct, is there anything else i could be missing??? help please

    Sounds like the pinion gear not throwing and meshing with ring gear, you could try hitting the starter on the bum using a block of wood and a hammer if you can get a swing at it. If not you will have to pull the starter out and check that the pinion locks in one direction and turns smoothly in in the reverse direction. If it turns or locks in both directions you will need to repair or replace.

    Bendix drive could be worn out. Replacement part could be available elsewhere.
